The Story: Double-sided pendant with intricate hairwork images on vellum, one side featuring an urn with two doves, trees, and a sweet pup, and a pansy to the reverse. Pansies were a common French symbol of love and remembrance, from the verb "penser," to think. This piece dates from the very early 1800s, and the images are in remarkable condition given their age. I saw it in the window of a small shop in the south of France and it stopped me in my tracks.
