The Story:
Pigeons weren't always thought of as rats with wings. In the early 1900s, when this medallion was made, they were prized birds capable of delivering messages- and had been for centuries. They competed at the Paris Olympics in 1900. The British Royal Family started keeping carrier pigeons in the late 19th century. And, in the early 20th century, they were raced by industrial workers. This hefty medal, though undedicated, was likely given as a prize in one of those races.
